September 2017

I like the month of September. I mean I REALLY like the month of September! What is there not to like? Football kicks into gear, the weather begins to let us know that fall is coming, and the church begins to come out of its summer “break.” The community and the church both become more energized and alive. It is like our little place in the world gets back on schedule. School helps to get our younger families back into a “routine.” Our church attendance improves, and our youth and children’s ministries go from their summer schedule to their wide open schedule! In some ways it’s like all of us came back from vacation and returned to “normal life.”

There are so many things about this month that are good. (Did I mention football:)). But two of the other great things are the Bible studies and Wednesday Night Live that springs to life here at Holland’s UMC. Wednesday Night Live begins September 13th with a meal at 5:45 followed by different events for all ages at 6:30. I will be teaching a one hour Bible Study that will cover Genesis/Exodus in Room 102. I am calling it, “In the Beginning.” It will be a 6-7 week course.

There are also a lot of other wonderful studies being offered by great teachers and youth/children leaders starting in September! There is also going to be a Men’s Bible Study on Thursday mornings at 7 in Room 102. We will begin by studying the book “In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day,” by Mark Batterson. (Get the large print book; the other paperbacks print is very small). I will be teaching that class as well. What I am trying to say is that September is a great month to kick your spiritual journey back into full gear. I hope every one of you will use this month as a golden opportunity to get back into the flow of things, especially our church. This is a great time for a fresh start, a new beginning, a recommitment to our Lord and to his church!

Holland’s is going to be a very exciting place filled with fun, fellowship, and joy as we walk into fall. Discover why an “old book” is called a “living word.” Rediscover old friendships and make new ones! Learn some Bible facts that could win you a million dollars on Jeopardy!  Find out why Holland’s UMC is one of the best churches in Raleigh! It’s a great time. September is an exciting time here, from worship services to Bible studies and from children and youth activates to Sunday school classes. Come join us and see why!

Agape, Rev. Rich  smile

At the beginning of the year, each family at Holland’s was given a copy of the Bob Crossman book “Six Steps to a Generous Life: Living Your Commitment to Christ” by The Stewardship Committee.  We hope that you have taken the time to read it – maybe several times.  It is not a long read but can be used as a guide for your Christian journey.

We also hope that you have been taking notice of the posters that have been placed in the classrooms and at various locations around the church.  They were designed to focus on each of the six chapters in Crossman’s book, and are meant to be a reminder to read a specific chapter.

Teach us to Pray       Daily Bible Reading   Go to the Lord's House Be My Witness

In his sermon a few weeks ago, Rev. Rich mentioned the top five things you never hear at church.  Number #2 was “Nothing inspires and renews my commitment like our annual stewardship campaign.”  Well, we have reached that time in the Stewardship Campaign.

Through our giving, God’s Church that we call Holland’s can and has touched many lives in our community, our state, in Mississippi, Louisiana, in Appalachia and countries around the world.  Like the Apostle Peter in John 21:15 (NRSV) we have heard Jesus’ words to “Feed my lambs” and obeyed.

Our tithes and gifts help provide opportunities for our youth and adults to serve on ASP teams, to learn new skills, to grow in their faith, and to share their faith with others.  We have heeded Jesus’ command to “Tend my sheep.”

Our giving helps to provide educational materials for Bible studies, support for our Boy Scout and Girl Scout programs, and a thriving Youth Program that is helping to develop our next generation of church leaders.  Our generosity helps to provide meals for the homeless, a safe place for Family Promise of Wake County, and many other outreach programs.  Through these acts of generosity, we are striving to follow Jesus’ command to “Feed my sheep.” John 21:17

Just as a stone tossed into a lake or pond will create ripples that will travel the length and breadth of that body of water, so too can our generosity create ripples of rare and remarkable consequence for service in the name of our Lord Jesus.  Please prayerfully consider your financial commitment to our church

“Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”  2 Corinthians 9:7 NRSV

Remember the Lord Jesus’ words: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”  Acts 20:35 NRSV

Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina – In August, Holland's UMC volunteers worked our regularly scheduled monthly work date at the Food Bank warehouse on Capital Boulevard. This month volunteers participated in “salvage” operations of meat food items donated by local food stores.  In total our work helped salvage 9,800 lbs. of food or approximately 8,100 meals.

Reminder, Holland's UMC regularly scheduled monthly work dates are the 2nd Thursday of each month.  We meet at the church parking lot at 8:15 a.m. & caravan up to the Food Bank warehouse, where we work from 9:00 a.m. to noon. There is no monthly commitment, no heavy lifting, just come and work when you can. We have a lot of fun working with others as the hands and body of Christ.
