Billy Graham died today (2/21/2018). Rev, Graham, age 99, was without a doubt the greatest preacher, pastor, and Evangelist for generations of Americans. During his active ministry, he preached to over 215 million people in 185 countries, as well as millions more through radio and television. It is estimated that over 2.2 Billion people have heard his sermons. He preached about Jesus to more people than anyone in the history of Christianity. Known as “America’s pastor” he met with every US President from Harry Truman to Barack Obama. (1950-2016, 11 Presidents in all). He was unable to meet with President Donald Trump due to Rev. Graham’s age and declining health, but they had met and talked earlier in Trump's career.

During his active ministry, Billy Graham shared a simple and powerful message. His message was one of we are sinners, Repent, and believe in Jesus and you will be saved. At one point in his ministry, he summed up his job beautifully when he said, “It is the Holy Spirit’s job to convict, God’s job to judge, and my job to love”!  What has this to do with Holland’s UMC, Lent, and Easter? That’s a great question but here is what I am thinking….

We are now into our Lenten journey. March 25 th is Palm Sunday and April 1 st (yes, April fool’s Day) is Easter. There are Bible studies, sermons, devotions, and music all leading us along this path to Easter morning. Without Lent we do not experience the real hope, joy, and excitement of Easter morning. Billy Graham understood this, and it was the thread that ran through all of his sermons. Lent is a time to Reflect (Bible studies - we are sinners), Repent (sermons - turn toward Jesus), and Celebrate (songs, sermons, devotions - your salvation – Easter!). In our Lenten journey this year we would do well to follow this same message (Reflect, Repent, and Celebrate) so that we too can understand and celebrate what Billy Graham knew, believed, and preached. And we too will understand on Easter Morning what a wonderful, powerful, and exciting day it truly is !!
