Holland's United Methodist Church
February has always been known as the month of love because Valentine’s Day is in this month. Candy, cards, and flowers are big sellers. But this year it is truly an extra special month of love because Ash Wednesday falls on Valentine’s Day this month. Let that sink in for a moment. February 14th is not just Valentine’s Day it is also the beginning of Lent for us Christians! Lent is a period of 40 days (not counting Sundays) which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. So Valentine’s Day this year begins our journey to the greatest gift of love ever given – EASTER. Easter also has cards, candy, and flowers (Easter Lilies) but it is so much more. It reminds us of God’s love for us. If Christmas is God’s love letter to us then Easter is the exclamation point (!!!) at the end of the story. Many say that John 3:16 is God’s Valentine to us:
Jesus gave us two main commandments… “Love the Lord and love each other”.
Make sure February is a month you practice that every day! In fact, let February be the month that jump starts you into loving God and each other, EVERYDAY of the year! Amen? Amen!!!

Ever thought about deepening your prayer life? Centering Prayer is an ancient method of praying that focuses on being silent and attentive to the action and work of God within. It can cultivate a deeper sense of connection to God and fill you with a sense of deep and abiding peace. Our centering prayer group meets on Monday nights at 6:45 pm in Room 101. We are just beginning a new book that we will discuss together as we seek to continue in prayer. The book is Richard Rohr's Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life. If you'd like to learn more about centering prayer or if your just interested in knowing more about spiritual formation come join us for this season as we explore Falling Upward.
If you find yourself going through a tough time, I'd recommend seeking out a Stephen Minister to help. I found myself struggling when I lost two friends back-to-back. One was a friend from the past and the other was a close co-worker. Ordinarily I'd never think to reach out and look for a Stephen Minister. Sure I'd noticed that life just seemed dull and lackluster, but I never thought others could notice. When my family and friends started pointing it out too, I decided it was time to look for someone to talk to and pray with about had happened. I am really glad I did! I found that God worked through my Stephen Minister to bring me deeper peace about my losses, and helped me to see some of the wounds from my past that were behind how I was feeling. If my experience is any indication, I have no doubt God is at work through our Stephen Ministers and I still thank God for mine.
